Next year marks the 40th year of continuous production for the iconic GSX-R moniker. And we believed that was a good enough occasion for Suzuki to update its flagship GSX-R1000 after six long years. So when its USA division skipped the liter-class bike from its 2024 lineup, we had high hopes the bikemaker was finally answering our requests. Plus, our hopes were backed by several patent filings by the factory, most of which showed a new Gixxer. Little did anyone know, we were setting ourselves up for disappointment because Suzuki has now introduced the 2024 GSX-R1000 in America.

The 2024 Suzuki GSX-R1000 Has Only New Color Options

For the past few years, we’ve only seen new colors for the GSX-R1000 in the name of ‘updates’ and 2024 is no different. You get three new liveries now, namely Glass Matte Mechanical Gray, Glass Sparkle Black, and Pearl Brilliant White. The first one wraps the motorcycle in a triple-tone finish, comprising a matte gray base coat, black/red graphics, and red wheels. The second one is comparatively simpler, courtesy of an all-black base coat with cyan-ish graphics.

Our favorite is the last one. It’s exclusive to the GSX-R1000R, and flaunts a quadruple-tone finish (three tones of blue plus white). This is elevated by blue USD forks and wheels. Heck, even the fork gas cylinder and knob are color-coordinated.

The 2024 Suzuki GSX-R1000 Produces 199 Horsepower

Though the colors make the Gixxer sexier, the lack of changes elsewhere is simply saddening. So you continue to get the 999cc, inline-four powerhouse, equipped with liquid cooling and variable valve timing. This is not your usual electronic/hydraulic VVT, though. Instead, the system is completely mechanical, which puts it on a back foot against its modern-day contemporaries like the BMW S 1000 RR. It’s worth noting Suzuki had patented an electronic VVT for the Gixxer, but there’s no sign of a production version.

To make matters worse, the mill produces 199 horsepower and 87 pound-feet. The output is not only one of the lowest in the class but also nowhere near the Europeans. For reference, the S 1000 RR has 210 horsepower and the Aprilia RSV4 1100 boasts 217 ponies. Same goes for technology. In the era of TFTs, the GSX-R employs an LCD instrument cluster that looks rather dated. You get rider aids such as an IMU, traction control, ride modes, cornering ABS, and an up-down quickshifter. Again, nowhere near its super-advanced European rivals.

What about the price, you ask? Well, the 2024 GSX-R1000 starts from $16,349, a $200 increment over the 2023 model. The top-spec GSX-R1000R, meanwhile, comes in at $18,499, which is $300 more than before. At this price, the base model GSX-R undercuts its closest rivals–the Kawasaki Ninja ZX-10R and Honda CBR1000RR–by $1,450 and $250, respectively.

Suzuki Has Also Introduced The 2024 GSX-8S, GSX-S1000GT, And V-Strom 1050

Gixxer aside, the Japanese bikemaker has taken the wraps off its other 2024 range as well. First up, the popular GSX-S range has received a variety of liveries. The GSX-8S now has two new colors - Metallic Matte Gray (with gray wheels) and Metallic Matte Black (with blue wheels). Whereas, the bigger GSX-S1000 flaunts Matte Sword Silver and Triton Blue–both new for 2024. The sport-touring GSX-S1000GT, meanwhile, is now wrapped in either Glass Sparkle Black or Candy Daring Red. Both have new dark bronze alloy wheels that increase the sportiness of the motorcycle.

As for ADVs, the V-Strom 1050 and 650 both gain new colors. The former comes in Glass Blaze Orange (base variant), Glass Sparkle Black (DE variant), and Pearl Vigor Blue (Adventure variant). While the smaller 650 flexes Solid Iron Gray (base variant), Glass Sparkle Black (XT variant), and Pearl Vigor Blue (Adventure variant). The first two 650s come with new-for-2024 orange accents for some extra swagger.
