The Toyota GR86 has become a fan favorite in the first decade of its existence, with owners and enthusiasts falling in love with its deft handling and looks. As with any modern car, there will always be a bunch of dedicated professionals who look at them and think, “How can we make this car look more radical?”. This is exactly what Japanese body kit specialists Aimgain did by giving the Toyota GR86 a very aggressive makeover. While the stock appearance of the car is great, Aimgain dials it up to eleven with a new front bumper with a blacked-out grille, side skirts, a tiny roof splitter, and a large rear spoiler.

Aimgain has consistently delivered exceptional projects, particularly with JDM cars, exemplified by their remarkable work on a Honda NSX transformation back in 2019. The GR 86 /BRZ has robust aftermarket support due to its popularity, but Aimgain has really made us sit up and take notice as well. The back of this build is more impressive than the front with the incorporation of a gigantic rear wing that not only carries an aesthetic punch but also looks like it will be functional. A diffuser has also been skillfully fashioned, accompanied by titanium-tipped tailpipes featuring a distinctive burnt finish.

In related news, Toyota is set to introduce a limited edition version of the 2024 GR86 sports car, dubbed the Trueno Edition. The Trueno (which means thunder in Spanish) draws inspiration from the iconic 1980s AE86 Corolla, also known as the Corolla Sport GT-S and Sprinter Trueno, in Japan. Paying homage to the legendary AE86 Corolla, this unique edition features a black and white two-tone and an integrated performance package.

Toyota only plans to send a limited batch of 860 Trueno Editions to the enthusiastic U.S. market. For customers in the United States, there's an additional choice of red paint coupled with black decals. This configuration introduces GT stripes running along the sides, a black stripe on the hood, black door handles, and a black rear lip spoiler.

The Gazoo Racing tuned performance package is aimed at optimizing handling, ride comfort, and braking performance. The Performance package encompasses ZF Sachs nitrogen dampers and larger Brembo brakes, augmenting the GR86's typical 2.4-liter engine configuration, which yields 223 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. The tuning ensures that peak torque is delivered at 3,700rpm. This performance package is optional on other trims but comes standard on the Trueno edition. I

Inside the car, the cabin is adorned with faux leather seats accented by red leather trim, accompanied by a leather-clad steering wheel and shift boot featuring red stitching. Standard features also include all-weather floor and trunk mats, along with a distinctive Trueno Edition shift knob. Each car comes with special badging showcasing the Trueno edition will be one of 860.

What Would A Roadster Version Of The GR86 Look Like?

Automotive digital artist Sean Demetros recently showcased one of his renders which showed us what a GR86 roadster would look like. One of the main drawbacks the GR86 had when compared to the other small Japanese sports car - the MX-5 Miata, was that there was not a convertible option.

Sean has shown us that Toyota should look into this as a feasible option, as the render looks great and there will surely be a demand for it. He actually gained the inspiration for the artwork when he saw the GR86 and MX-5 next to each other at a traffic light. Sean’s page is filled with his incredible 3D work, exclusively dedicated to some of our favorite cars.

According to BestCarWeb in Japan, the upcoming GR86 is likely to feature a hybrid powertrain. The new generation GR 86 is also expected to adopt its platform from the reliable Lexus IS sedan, with adjustments to accommodate a more compact wheelbase.

This adaptation aims to combine the established dependability of the IS over the years with the dynamic and spirited essence that defines the GR86. We can anticipate a combined output of around 300+ horsepower. While the hybrid configuration might add some weight to the GR86, the report suggests that the new model is projected to maintain a weight under 3,000 pounds. Hopefully, the price of progress is not us losing out on the manual transmission.

Enthusiasts have consistently voiced their opinion that, despite its excellent driving dynamics, the GR86 could do with a boost in horsepower. Designed with fans in mind, the GR86 has always catered to a passionate audience, and hopefully, Toyota has been listening. Beyond merely meeting the expectations of its dedicated followers, there's the imperative to remain competitive within the industry.

As the majority of automakers chart a course toward full or partial electrification by the decade's end, Toyota too is aligning with this trajectory. The prospect of witnessing a fully electric GR86 entering the scene is not entirely far-fetched, as the automotive landscape continues to evolve.
