Porsche is a name known the world over for its unrivaled performance and precision, as well as their rich history of touring and racing. Their refined recipe consistently delivers high-performance sports cars that compete at the highest level, alongside Ferrari and Lamborghini to name a few.

The 911 is among the most recognizable and identifiable models Porsche has ever produced, with car enthusiasts and average hobbyists being able to identify the popular sports coupe’s “Coke bottle” shape and rounded rear upon first glance. The 992 generation of 911s, more specifically the Turbo S, may just transcend the line between sports car and hypercar considering the performance stats it boasts, and how it compares to modern hypercars, as well as similar sports cars.

However, that comparison may be a stretch, as few sports cars compare to the Porsche 911, and even fewer compared to the 911 Turbo S 992.

What Makes The 911 Turbo S 992 Special

The Porsche 911 Turbo S 992 is a special model in that it elevates the performance of the 911 in a way that sets it apart from the competition. The 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged Boxer 6 flat-six engine makes 640 horsepower and 590 pound-feet of torque, carrying the Turbo S 992 from 0-60 MPH in 2.6 seconds.

The wider track and wheelbase allow for bigger tires, 255 in the front and 315 in the rear to be exact, which enhance grip and compliment the sport suspension, giving the 992 added composure when tackling uneven roads or tough corners at higher speeds.

The widened track is noticeable upon comparison to the previous generation of 911s; however, Porsche’s intuitive designs and tried-and-true active aero system transform the 922 into an aggressive sports car with the appearance of popular track-inspired hypercars.

The 911 Turbo S 922 starts at $203,500, a hefty price tag when compared to popular sportscars such as the C8 Corvette. And though the C8 is often compared to foreign hypercars due to its surprisingly similar performance stats and relatively low price, the Porsche 911 Turbo S 922 takes the edge over the Vette, due in part to the experienced field Porsche operates in, as well as the advanced in-house upgrades only available to Porsche.

Another American model that competes with the 992 in terms of performance is the 2022 Ford GT. The American icon made a name for the Blue Oval by beating Ferrari at Le Mans in the 1960s, Fast-forward to the 2022 model year and the Ford GT is still a deadly track weapon in every sense of the word.

Featuring a twin turbo-charged V-6, the GT makes 620 horsepower and 550 pound-feet of torque, slightly less than the 911 Turbo S 992, and can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 3.0 seconds. With a starting price of $500,000, the Ford GT doesn’t offer the level of performance at the price the 992 is able to.

The Porsche 992 Challenges Top Hypercars At Half The Price

With all the bells and whistles, the 911 Turbo S 992 will set you back about $230,400. This price includes Porsche’s top-of-the-line features, including enhanced driver-assist features, a heated steering wheel, bespoke 930 leather package upholstery, and 18-way adjustable sport seats, among other upgrades both cosmetic and mechanic.

The adjustable suspension is also an important feature, as it is programmable, allowing the 992 to recognize the road conditions and adjust the suspension accordingly. Having said that, adjustable suspension isn’t exclusive to the Porsche, but it does include a host of top-tier mechanics.

10-piston front brakes and four-piston rear performance brakes allow the 992 to stop on a dime, even when pushing the sports car to the limits. 10-piston brakes are larger than the usually employed six-piston brakes used in similar sports cars, telling of the accelerative and handling excellence of the 911 Turbo S 992.

Sport exhaust gives the twin-turbocharged Boxer six engine the quintessential Porsche roar, while the eight-speed PDK dual-clutch transmission, all-wheel drivetrain, and wide wheelbase carry the sports car like none other before it, leading industry veterans to recognize the 911 Turbo S 922 an “enhanced” 911.

The 640 horses under the hood of the Porsche are only rivaled by top performance names such as the McLaren 720S and Lamborghini Huracan, with the 720S' twin-turbocharged V-8 that produces 710-horsepower and the Huracan’s twin-turbocharged V-10 making 631 horsepower.

The McLaren 720S sports a carbon fiber exterior and a seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Paired with the unrivaled chassis tuning, the 720S can accelerate from 0-60 MPH in 2.6 seconds, topping out at 212 MPH. Though the performance stats may be similar to the 992, the price of a McLaren 720S starts at over $310,000 MSRP, nearly $100,000 more than the 911 Turbo S 992 MSRP.

The Lamborghini Huracan more closely rivals the Porsche 992 in terms of price and performance, with the Huracan starting at $212,090 MSRP. Boasting a naturally aspirated 5.2-liter twin-turbocharged V-10, the Huracan can race from 0-60 MPH in 2.5 seconds and devour a quarter mile in 10.4 seconds at 135 MPH. But with a recorded top speed of 193 MPH, the Huracan falls short of the 911 Turbo S 992’s top speed of 205 MPH, while pricing is higher.

High Price, High-Performance Hypercars That Top The Porsche 911 Turbo S 922

Blue Ferrari SF90 Spider

To discuss a model that would surpass the Porsche 911 Turbo S 992, we would have to bring up such cars including the Ferrari SF90, a visceral performance vehicle that occupies a space very few get to experience.

The SF90 features a hybrid powertrain employing a 4.0-liter twin turbocharged V-8 with three electric motors, and produces a combined 986-horsepower, far more than the 992. The SF90 can sprint from 0-60 MPH in 2.5-seconds with a top speed of 211 MPH.

Boasting chart-topping stats, the Ferrari SF90 is a speed enthusiast’s dream car. This is where it is likely to remain, as the starting price for this supercar starts at $530,000 – more than double the Porsche Turbo S 992’s starting MSRP.

Other hypercars including the Hennessey Venom F5 and the McLaren Speedtail both have the necessary equipment to easily top the Porsche 992, but at a price of one million and up, neither compete in terms of price and availability. The Hennessey Venom F5 boasts a 7.6-liter twin-turbocharged V-8 that puts out over 1,600 horsepower. It also starts at $1.6-mil and is in limited production.
