The new Chevrolet Corvette is one of the most impressive vehicles ever built. A true masterpiece in American engineering, we can’t help but watch in awe as it destroys the lap times of cars and double its price. This car is a true track legend. Opting for the Z06 model means you want to go faster, stop harder, and turn in quicker than just about anything out there. The newest version is an absolute monster with its 5.5 liters, flat-plane crank, and naturally aspirated V-8 capable of deploying 670 horsepower through its giant 325-section rear tires.
The car feels absolutely ballistic to drive with nearly unbelievable amounts of power constantly ready for duty. It feels relentless and can reach amazing speeds in what feels like no time. The thing is though, there’s even another step up in performance. For those who want the most grip, lightest weight, and most lateral G-capable Corvette, there is the Z07 package aimed at adding downforce, reducing unsprung weight, adding tire width, and optimizing the car a step further for track use.
Assuming we are equipping our Z06 with the Z07 pack, which most people seem to want, the top speed would be 188 mph. This is mainly due to the Z07’s added downforce creating more drag on the car and thus, bringing that top speed down slightly. Still, though 188 miles per hour is no small number, today everything manufacturers build seems to be fast. To prove that point, the cars listed here are powerful and more practical, yes, but the average passerby would never know that they could beat that 188-mile-per-hour figure.
Although they dominate in speed, here are some things to keep in mind:
- None of these competitors belong to the supercar class
- Z06 without the Z07 pack would be faster than some, but not all on this list at 195 MPH
- None of these competitors have aero enhancements like the Corvette Z06
- There will be more powerful, faster versions of the Chevrolet Corvette
- None of these competitors can accelerate or laterally handle as well as the Z06
10 Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing
Top Speed: 189 MPH
This one barely makes it, but yes GM’s own Cadillac CT4-V Blackwing will best the Chevrolet Corvette Z06 with the Z07 pack by one mile per hour. Because of its more slippery aero, the Cadillac can reach a very brisk 189 miles per hour, just edging out the Z07-equipped Corvette.
Specs and Performance
Engine | Twin-Turbo 3.6-Liter V-6 |
Output | 472 horsepower 445-pound feet |
Drivetrain | RWD |
Transmission | Six-Speed Manual, 10-speed Auto |
0-60 MPH | 3.8 seconds |
Top Speed | 189 MPH |
While it certainly feels and sounds faster, the Caddy is able to zip its way up to a higher speed. Being twin-turbocharged helps as there is just enough torque, but for more of the rev range to give it the push it needs to reach its impressive top speed.
9 BMW M5
Top Speed: 190 MPH
We all know it will do more, but officially the BMW M5 can reach at least 190 miles per hour. This beats the Corvette by just two miles per hour, but completely unlimited, the M5 should be able to crack over 200 miles per hour, thoroughly walking away from the American supercar.
Specs and Performance
Engine | Twin-Turbo 4.4-liter V-8 |
Output | 600 horsepower 553 pound-feet |
Drivetrain | AWD |
Transmission | Eight-speed automatic transmission |
0-60 MPH | 3.2 seconds |
Top Speed | 190 MPH |
The M5 has always been something of a sleeper. Besides the badges and sometimes having a shouty exhaust (but not always), the M5, in a dull color, could blend in with other traffic extremely easily. It isn’t until you unleash the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V-8 to do the dirty work of speed that you know what you're dealing with.
8 Audi RS6 Avant
Top Speed: 190 MPH
Performance wagons are fast. Really fast. So fast, in fact, that Audi’s RS6 Avant (audi speak for wagon) will top out at speeds just above the Corvette’s at 190 miles per hour. We aren’t talking about a small car here, the RS6 is one of Audi’s largest, and the team was determined to make a fast one, as they have with almost all the cars in their linup.
Specs and Performance
Engine | Twin-Turbo 4.0-liter V-8 |
Output | 621 horsepower 627 pound-feet |
Drivetrain | AWD |
Transmission | Eight-speed automatic transmission |
0-60 MPH | 3.1 seconds |
Top Speed | 190 MPH |
This is different though. It's a massive step forward for not only fast Audis, but for their wagons, particularly in the U.S. The power and speed seem somehow appropriate for the RS6 Avant, though, as it's less shouty visually, and audibly than its competition from Mercedes-Benz. It’s more sleeper, and way less gimmicky. Still though the wagon aspect means you get the best of both worlds, a mighty fast sports car, and the kids will never be late to practice.
7 Audi S8 Plus
Top Speed: 190 mph
Like something out of a Jason Statham movie, the Audi S8 is a super subtle monster in disguise. A bruiser with a clean suit on. Audi routinely offers performance packs for their cars or will tack on the coveted, “Plus” to their already wildly fast RS cars.
Specs and Performance
Engine | Twin-Turbo 4.0-liter V-8 |
Output | 605 horsepower 553 pound-feet |
Drivetrain | AWD |
Transmission | Eight-speed automatic transmission |
0-60 MPH | 3.3 seconds |
Top Speed | 190 MPH |
With these extra special models, you unlock access to a significantly higher top speed than the usual 155 electronically limited variety. In the case of the S8 Plus, you’d see a top speed of 190 miles per hour. When you need to hide under the radar but make a fast getaway, the S8 Plus can get the job done. No wonder it was the car of choice for The Transporter at one point.
6 Mercedes-AMG E63 S Wagon
Top Speed: 190 mph
The ultimate mommy missile, from Mercedes-Benz and AMG. The E63 S is the wonder wagon that has become something of a legend. Before the Audi RS6 made it to America, we relied on the E63 to scratch the go-fast wagon itch. This car relies on AMG’s more potent variant of the corporate 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8. Output sits at 603 and sends it to all four wheels.
Specs and Performance
Engine | Twin-Turbo 4.0-liter V-8 |
Output | 603 horsepower 627 pound-feet |
Drivetrain | AWD |
Transmission | Nine-speed automatic transmission |
0-60 MPH | 3.0 seconds |
Top Speed | 190 MPH |
The E63 has an important job here. Its main goal was to provide us with a ridiculously fast wagon since Audi and BMW wouldn’t do it for many years. Through competition with those brands, it was inevitable that the E63 S became the monster it is, even overshadowing cars like the Z06. This is a true heavy hitter and Mercedes-AMG wanted to establish the status quo with the wagon version.
5 Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo
Top Speed: 196 mph
Another fast wagon! While the Audi RS6 Avant is getting all the attention lately, we can’t forget that the Panamera did it first. This 196-mile-per-hour luxe machine will have you flying across the country faster than the Z06, and in top-tier comfort while doing it.
Specs and Performance
Engine | Twin-Turbo 4.0-liter V-8 Hybrid |
Output | 690 horsepower 641 pound-feet |
Drivetrain | AWD |
Transmission | Eight-speed automatic transmission |
0-60 MPH | 3.0 seconds |
Top Speed | 196 MPH |
It seems all Porsches must be fast, which is desirable in a performance-oriented brand. The Porsche Panamera Turbo S E-Hybrid Sport Turismo combines a 4.0 liter twin-turbo V-8 engine with an electric hybrid system that cranks out 690 horsepower, which is quite a bit, and enough to propel the 5,300-pound behemoth to speeds the Z07 will never see. A hybrid wagon that will out pace the Z06 at speed, what more could you want?
4 Alpina B8
Top Speed: 201 MPH
The Alpina customer is not the BMW M customer. The Alpina driver has a low-key demeanor that undercuts even the already sleepy BMW M5. Don’t forget, the B8 starts life as a normal 8-series and is then converted for Alpina-type duties. Alpina has always stood for a sleeper vibe but with immense power under the hood.
Specs and Performance
Engine | Twin-Turbo 4.4-liter V-8 |
Output | 612 horsepower 590 pound-feet |
Drivetrain | AWD |
Transmission | Eight-speed automatic transmission |
0-60 MPH | 3.3 seconds |
Top Speed | 201 MPH |
The Alpina B8 harbors a 612 horsepower version of BMW’s corporate V-8. 590 pounds-feet of torque is a very healthy number too, so it’s no wonder the B8 can whizz past the Z06 as if it were standing still. The B8 looks like a barely modified 8-series gran coupe, a more practical, four-door version of BMW's sleek 8-Series, so you would never guess the incredible potential that lies within.
3 Aston Martin DB12
Top Speed: 202 mph
The fact that Aston Martin was able to massage 671 horsepower from their version of AMG’s 4.0 V-8 is impressive. This, however, is not as impressive as the sheer speed it is able to put down in the fairly large DB12, they are now calling a, "super tourer" from the British marque.
Specs and Performance
Engine | Twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8 |
Output | 671 horsepower 590 pound-feet |
Drivetrain | RWD |
Transmission | Eight-speed automatic transmission |
0-60 MPH | 3.5 seconds |
Top Speed | 202 MPH |
DB12 takes the DB11 recipe and kicks things up a few notches. Everything from the handling to the power, and delivery from the Mercedes-AMG sourced twin-turbo V-8 has been refined for DB12. Aston Martin says because of its higher output from the V-8, there is no need for a V-12 model. In fact this V-8 produces exactly one more horsepower than the Z06's 670, but will beat out the Z07's top speed by 14 miles per hour, all while providing seating for four in a cabin that doesn't feel like a bunker.
2 Maserati Ghibli Trofeo
Top Speed: 203 mph
Nobody is laughing anymore. The scrawny little Ghibli that debuted a decade ago has come a long way. With a little help from big brother Ferrari, the Ghibli has gone through a heart transplant and now the Trofeo model possesses a 572 horsepower V-8 capable of catapulting the Ghibli to a top speed of 203 miles per hour, a truly unbelievable number, considering many saw it as a glammed up Chrysler 300.
Specs and Performance
Engine | Twin-Turbo 3.8-liter V-8 |
Output | 572 horsepower 538 pound-feet |
Drivetrain | RWD |
Transmission | Eight-speed automatic transmission |
0-60 MPH | 4 seconds |
Top Speed | 203 MPH |
Our second-fastest car here is able to hit speeds no current Corvette can, regardless of spec. The Maserati Ghibli Trofeo is a serious speed machine and just as fast as it appeared, it’s soon going away as ll V-8 powered Maseratis are being discontinued. This Maserati will be remembered as the one that could beat even a top-tier Chevy Corvette.
1 Bentley Flying Spur Speed Edition 12
Top Speed: 207 mph
It’s called “Speed” for a reason. By far the fastest car here, the Bentley Flying Spur Speed Edition 12 is a celebratory moment for the brand, showcasing the W-12 in all its glory. Ironically, perhaps the sleepiest of Corvette killers is the Bentley Flying Spur Speed. The car is massive, like the Bentayga, it weighs 5300 pounds and is built around providing its passengers with ultimate luxury with rich materials and a heavily insulated cabin.
Specs and Performance
Engine | Twin-turbo 6.0-liter W12 |
Output | 626 horsepower 624 pound-feet |
Drivetrain | AWD |
Transmission | Eight-speed automatic transmission |
0-60 MPH | 3.7 seconds |
Top Speed | 207 MPH |
This isn’t exactly a sports car, and yet, it is much faster than even some of the best sports cars out there. The Flying Spur Speed is one of those best-of-both-worlds cars with an equal emphasis on engineering and interior comfort, it’s a true dual personality, and the numbers to back it up. There might not be anything classier to whoop a Corvette in than this.
