In case you hadn't noticed, the EV realm is getting overcrowded with SUVs and pick-up trucks, while other body types are being wiped out of the equation. Volkswagen, which has been steadily adapting to the changing of the guard, seems to be aware of that. After reviving the famous Kombi with an electric powertrain, the German automaker is now putting sedans back on the map, or not. It is difficult to gauge the ID.7 by looking at it, as it doesn't really look "sedan-like" the way an old-school Volkswagen Passat would.

Nonetheless, this peculiar, hatchback/sedan styling puts the ID.7 in direct contention with a varied array of EVs, such as the Model 3, the Hyundai Ioniq 6, or even the Chevy Bolt EV, which is expected to come back with a reinvigorated aura. However, in terms of pricing, the ID.7 should hover over them all, since its estimated MSRP is currently at $55,000. Although the figure is average for an electric vehicle, it is still far from the budget-friendly end of the market, especially when considering that the ID.7 will not be eligible for any tax credits in the U.S.

At the same time, the electric sedan does match this hefty price tag, with a luxuriant interior, a sleek design, a decent amount of range, and an impressive array of technology. As of now, the all-new, all-electric Volkswagen ID.7 is available to order, and set to be released in 2024, as a 2025 model. In the meantime, here's everything we know so far.

The ID.7 Comes Stacked With High Tech Features

The cabin, in typical Volkswagen fashion, will come packed with the latest technology, and offer a premium feel, consistent with the hefty price tag. It is worth noting that the ID.7 is introducing a number of new technologies. Right off the bat, VW tells us the ID.7 will be the first vehicle to incorporate intelligent electronic air vents. This new tech allows for faster heating and cooling. For an extra fee, you may choose to top the cockpit with a large panoramic sunroof. The “smart glass” on the latter can be adjusted from opaque to transparent via touch, or voice control.

The IDA voice assistant was also optimized to better understand natural language. The company claims to have taken many customer requests into account when making the new infotainment system. The 15-inch touchscreen dominates the dashboard, and is complemented by a 5.3-inch gauge cluster. An augmented reality head-up display will also be available as a standard feature. The ID.7 will also include a driver assist system. In that regard, the standard features on the introductory trim level will include:

  • Travel Assist
  • Lane Assist
  • Emergency Assist
  • Side Assist
  • Area view, combined with a rearview camera system

A number of packages are also made available, for an extra fee. The interior Package Plus includes additional airbags, ergoActive seats, and a Harman Kardon sound system equipped with:

  • Twelve loudspeakers
  • One central speaker
  • 700-watt total power
  • A digital 16-channel amplifier with a subwoofer

Aside from that, the ID.7 appears to offer plenty of legroom and headroom, and enjoys an 18.8 cubic feet (532 liters) luggage compartment. An optional Exterior package is also available, with features such as LED matrix headlights, and rear-tinted windows, while the Exterior package "Plus" provides progressive steering and a DCC adaptive chassis.

It Sprints From Rest To 60 mph In Five Seconds

Volkswagen

Initially, the ID.7 will hit the roads with a single-electric motor setup on both trims, churning out a total of 282 horsepower (210 kW) and up to 402 pound-feet of torque. These specs come courtesy of a new electric motor. known as the APP550, and is touted to be more powerful and more efficient than its predecessor, according to Volkswagen. The company started making the APP550 at the Volkswagen Group Components site in Kassel, Germany in May 2023. The supplier is aiming for an output of 1,500 motors a day.

This new upgrade should notably result in a 0-60 mph time of around 5.0 seconds, which is roughly the average for EVs nowadays. When Car and Driver took a prototype of the ID.7 for a ride across a “tight backroad loop”, they notably reported an overall feeling of rigidity, and a “surprisingly firm ride”, despite the electronic dampers. The team also highlighted that the brake-pedal action felt somewhat artificial, but emphasized that the body control was remarkably superb.

The car was also reported taking corners with particular smoothness, combined with a rather explosive acceleration. Of course, the sample made available to Car And Driver was not a production model, and even possibly a far cry from what consumers will be treated to. The company may or may not address those issues before the ID.7 hits the road, so we’ll have to wait and see. Volkswagen also noted that the car was surprisingly nimble for its size, boasting a turning circle of just 10.9 meters (35.7 feet.), which is considerably close to that of the much smaller Kia Rio. Furthermore, the ID.7 has a respectable drag coefficient of 0.23.

The GTX Variant Will Take Things To The Next Level

The "Pro" variant of the ID.7 will be powered by a 77 kWh battery pack, which is also found on the ID.4. This trim will boast a maximum charging capacity of 170 kW. A higher trim, the Pro S, will later follow with an 86 kWh battery pack, and a maximum charging capacity of 200 kW. However, the latter will not be available in the U.S. In any case, both trims should offer a 10-80 percent charging time of 30 minutes.

As software updates keep accumulating, we can reasonably expect the DC charging power to increase overtime. The company is targeting an EPA range of 300 miles on the 77 kWh model, which would leave the ID.7 at a bit of a disadvantage in the US compared to its prominent rivals, such as the Tesla Model 3, and the Hyundai Ioniq 6, which touts an EPA-tested range of 360 miles.

On the other hand, the Pro S variant of the ID.7 will naturally be more efficient, with a targeted range of 435 miles WLTP (350 miles on the EPA cycle.), effectively making it one of the best EVs for long distances. But, again, it’s unfortunately not meant for American customers. A more powerful dual-motor version might potentially join the fray at some point, and considerably up the power specs, to the detriment of efficiency, as it will more than likely decrease the electric range of the vehicle.

In any case, a luxurious, more powerful variant is set to be introduced to the public in September 2023. This special trim level, known as the GTX, is Volkswagen’s equivalent of the GTI in the electric vehicle line-up. As a frame of reference, the ID.4 GTX was notably endowed with a few performance-enhancing features, such as standard sports suspension, and the Vehicle Dynamics Manager, which optimizes sporty driving, and accordingly adjusts the body of the car around corners.

Although we don’t have any information yet regarding the extra amount of torque and additional horses for the ID.7 GTX, we expect the badging to offer a significantly more dynamic driving experience. Remains to be seen, however, if it'll ever arrive on American shores, considering how the ID.4 GTX never made it to the U.S.
