The Tesla Roadster has always been a symbol of innovation and performance in electric vehicles. With the highly anticipated Roadster 2.0 set to debut, Tesla enthusiasts and sports car fans eagerly await its arrival. Initially scheduled for a 2021 release, the Roadster 2.0 has faced delays, but the wait promises to be worth it. This second-generation model aims to outshine its predecessor in every way possible. It will boast two small rear seats, offering a more practical and family-friendly option than the original Roadster.

Tesla CEO, Elon Musk, made bold claims when the Roadster concept was unveiled in 2017, including a jaw-dropping 1.9-second 0 to 60 mph time and a top speed of 250 mph. If these figures hold true, they will surpass the performance of any street-legal production car today. With an estimated price tag of $200,000 for the base model and $250,000 for the limited Founder's Series, the Roadster 2.0 promises to be a collector's dream. Only 1,000 copies of the Founder's Series will be produced, making it a rare gem for those looking to own a piece of automotive history.

Beyond its astonishing performance, the Roadster 2.0 will come equipped with a 200-kWh battery, which is said to provide an impressive 620 miles of range. However, it's worth noting that achieving this range would likely require gentle driving, as pushing the car to its limits on the track would considerably reduce the range. Regardless of what has happened with this debut: we're certainly excited about it.

The Roadster 2.0 Has Been In The Making For A Long Time

Although first announced in 2017, the Tesla Roaster 2.0 has been a topic of conversation and controversy for many years, with delays leading to a now-slated 2024 production. Pre-orders of the Roadster began in 2017, with a $50,000 deposit required, making this a sizable investment for those who wanted to get one. That played a significant role in the bumpy start to this drop, so we're hoping that come 2024, Tesla will have everything smoothed over. Because of the pandemic, Tesla had to delay production from 2021 to 2022 and has since fulfilled orders and built the supercars.

During a recent shareholder meeting, Elon Musk let everyone know this vehicle would ship out in 2024, hopefully toward Q1 or Q2. Of course, there aren't ever perfect car launches, especially when it's one of the most important electric vehicles of our time. There is a lot of pressure riding on this and Tesla as a company in 2023 and beyond, so time is ticking. That said, the Roadster 2.0 should come at the perfect time, as Ferrari and other sportscars manufacturers plan to release their own mega-EVs come 2025. As long as Tesla can get this vehicle out before then, it will have more than enough global attention.

The only concern with this long history of delays is that the Roadster won't see roads for another year or two at least, especially with current shortages and shipping delays setting car brands behind in their efforts.

Besides the rocky start, the Tesla Roadster 2.0 is set to be one of the most impressive EVs ever released. With an anticipated range of over 600 miles per charge, this supercar will set a new precedent for automakers and electric drivers across North America and the world. Elon Musk has stated many times this electric sportscar is set to redefine the way we see them. Musk has also mentioned that this model will be able to hit speeds of 0 to 62 mph (0–100 km/h) in 1.1 seconds with a rocket thruster option added and 0–60 mph (0–97 km/h) in 2.1 seconds for the base model. That would make it the fastest EV to date and one of the most impressive in terms of range.

Although the price tag for a Roadster 2.0 is hundreds of thousands of dollars, the bells and whistles almost make this EV worth it. Notably, the Roadster 2.0 will boast a top speed of 250 mph, which is incredible considering there isn't a super-engine beneath the car's hood. Doing this with an electric motor is unprecedented, again explaining why the car has continued to be pushed back.

Although these numbers are not 100% tested and confirmed, the all-new Roadster will boast 600 miles of range, go up to 150 mph, and hit speeds of 0–60 miles in 2.1 seconds with a base model. These are all record-shattering for the EV market, hence the $200,000+ price tag.

On top of that, the Roadster 2.0 has a unique look versus other Teslas, resembling a classic sportscar over a futuristic space pod like Musk tends to prioritize. That will either be a major plus for shoppers in the luxury EV market or put Tesla beside Ferrari, Porsche, etc. Tesla is constantly evolving and changing the way the industry moves. However, in recent times, other carmakers have stepped it up, which we're sure Tesla will try to eliminate.

Production Of The Roadster 2.0 Is Getting Pushed Constantly

  • Tesla's Roadster 2.0 has been delayed again until 2024.
  • Many speculate this vehicle will release at the end of next year.

One of the more recent components of this car's story is the pushback in production. As of summer 2023, Tesla plans to begin production of the Roadster 2.0 late this year in small numbers, cranking it up come 2024. From there, these should hit markets toward the end of the year unless otherwise noted. Tesla officially revealed the second-generation Roadster on December 14th, 2017, so after six years, we're still waiting to get behind of this supercar. However, like many groundbreaking creations, it's not surprising there have been so many problems.

The global shortage and delay of parts also did a number on the Roadster 2.0, so the universe has been working against it. We're hopeful this car will make it to showrooms next year, as well as into the hands of drivers shortly after. As long as this vehicle can come out before some of the other long-range cars in the works, Tesla should have a whole new segment it dominates.

  • The Tesla Roadster 2.0 has a starting MSRP of $200,000.
  • The more expensive, limited Founder's Series edition is $250,000.

The whopping price tag is one of the more jaw-dropping facts about a Tesla second-gen Roadster. As of now, the base model of this car will be $200,000, and the limited edition Founder's Series edition comes in at $250,000. Of course, Tesla has never been known as an affordable brand, so this luxury vehicle will have a matching cost. After all, most sportscars of the Roadster's caliber cost six figures, if not more, so Tesla could be right on target for that market.

The EV industry has seen expensive cars, but not many that are a quarter of a million dollars. Tesla would jump to the highest tier of the market, even surpassing some of the better-known racing brands out there. As of recent, we've noticed many carmakers shifting towards cheaper MSRPs, so Tesla is taking a risk here with Roadster 2.0. Will it pay off? Only time will tell. Let's hope the second-gen Roadster makes its way to us by 2024.
