2023 Hyundai Ioniq 6 Performance And Capability

Hyundai

Of course with an EV, there's no transmission or gears, everything is seamless, almost like driving a go-kart or golf cart. However, this is no golf cart. Clearly, with the numbers it packs, performance doesn't take a back seat in the Ioniq 6, and it shows. This is a fun and practical car in the making.

The Hyundai Ioniq isn't a boring or slow car by any means. Set to be offered with the standard 77.4 kWh battery pack, the Ioniq 6 will be available with a single or dual motor setup. Hyundai doesn't have numbers for us on the press release on lower-trim models yet, but the single-motor variant should pack around 225 horsepower, like on the Ioniq 5.

The dual-motor setup in the AWD version provides you with 320 horsepower (239 kW) of power and 446 pound-feet of torque; which is more than adequate. With the all-wheel drive option, expect great performance for this class of EVs, with Hyundai claiming 5.1 seconds to 60 mph.

The rear-wheel-drive model should make this a driver's car, while AWD makes this a practical car. AWD is optional and recommended for weather purposes and practicality. As with any EV, there's no engine, so that means no differential or drive shaft, just a set of motors, so maintenance costs are reduced and reliability is increased with fewer moving parts.

As for range, you can expect around 310 miles for the dual-motor model while the single-motor model should offer more, somewhere in the ballpark of 350 miles. Again these figures are yet to be tested and confirmed by the EPA. Another advantage that Hyundai / KIA EV models have is their support for 800-volt ultra-fast charging, which means going from 10 to 80 percent charge in just 18 minutes.

One thing to keep in mind if you're considering the Ioniq 6 (or any EV) is the cost of tires. EVs take special tires that can handle the weight of the vehicle, and those tires are expensive. Keep that in mind if you're looking at this vehicle. You'll save money by not having to change oil, differential oil, and things like that, but tires and coolant are still present and with the tires, they're sometimes double the price of regular tires for a standard vehicle.

Exterior Design

White Hyundai Ioniq 6
Hyundai

With Hyundai continuing its neo-retro futuristic theme, the exterior of the Ioniq 6 is stunning in our opinion. Gone are the boxy lines of the Ioniq 5 and in comes a more fluidic design. While the styling might not be to everyone's taste, it's very distinctive. Either way, this is a real head-turner of a vehicle. Starting up front, there is a unique air dam, of course, this is just a facade, but this starts off the unique look of the Ioniq 6. The headlights are oversized and are a three-jewel type design. Turn signals are integrated under the headlights as a pack of LEDs, all with the Ioniq brand's signature pixels.

There's a resemblance to both Hyundai's own Elantra and Sonata in the front design. Moving over to the side profile, the styling mimics the Elantra but is a little more coupe-ish. Huge 20-inch wheels with a geometric design set the tone. Black and silver accents on the wheels set a sporty tone too. The door handles are flush with the body, which doesn't just add a premium appearance and feel but is also great for aerodynamic efficiency.

The rear end presents a huge LED light bar that goes completely from side to side. Ioniq 6 is spelled out in lettering above the light assembly and the Hyundai badge is above the spoiler and backup camera. Overall, this vehicle presents us with the latest in design trends and style. As previously mentioned, it may not be to everyone's style, but it's very distinctive indeed, and we think it looks great. It's a stand-out vehicle in this class of EVs.

Interior Quality And Design

Hyundai Ioniq 6 Interior
Hyundai

The interior of the Hyundai Ioniq 6 is just as stylish, tech-laden, and futuristic as the outside. You have four color options. Dark gray with light gray, dark olive green with light gray, black with pale brown, and black. Two 12.3-inch screens, one for gauges, and one for infotainment dominate the dashboard. International markets also get screens instead of conventional rear-view side mirrors.

A vent runs the whole length of the dash, making the vehicle feel wide and open. Dual-zone climate control is standard. The cabin also features ambient lighting and that lighting changes with speed and vehicle status. The metallic speaker grilles for the Bose Premium audio system look particularly nice.

The steering wheel doesn't have a Hyundai badge on it. Instead, it has four dots which means "H" in Morse Code; a very cool detail. The glass roof adds lots of light, although it doesn't extend to the back seats. The seats themselves look conventional with headrests that look like they could've come from a Volvo.

With a completely flat floor, the rear offers plenty of room and seating for three adults. There's also a standard household outlet under the seats for charging all your devices. USB ports are also present in the back seat of the vehicle. There's even more ambient lighting and a large speaker on the door with an aluminum front adding some color to the door panel. We wish the glass roof expanded all the way into the back seat to add even more light. The interior textiles, dimensions, and options have not been officially confirmed by Hyundai.

Main Competition

Tesla Model 3
Tesla

Competition in the EV market is fierce. Every brand is aiming for the top gun of respective segments. The Hyundai Ioniq 6 has a foot in several segments with many competitors. We see it competing with the Tesla Model 3, the Nissan Leaf, and Chevrolet Bolt EV as its closest competitors. The Tesla offers more performance, however, the Hyundai packs more mainstream usability and features at a likely more affordable price.

The Nissan Leaf is a hatch and has more cargo space, although, it can't match the Hyundai in looks or performance. The Chevrolet Bolt is also a hatch and is considered an SUV, but it's a very low SUV, and it also doesn't offer the performance or looks of the Hyundai. The Hyundai Ioniq is a very elegantly designed car, and we think it'll have no problem holding its own in this fierce class.
