More than a decade after its debut (and subsequent name change from XV) the Subaru Crosstrek remains an affordable and reliable option for shoppers in an increasingly crowded sub-compact segment. 2024 Subaru Crosstrek Performance and Capability
Non-STi and WRX Subarus have never been mistaken for high-performance juggernauts. With 152 horsepower on tap, the base 2.0-liter is respectable, but can still be sluggish when passing or taking on-ramps. The optional 2.5-liter does offer more performance, delivering an additional 30 horsepower which should be adequate for most looking at a practical commuter. The biggest disappointment for 2024 is Subaru’s decision to ditch the six-speed manual transmission in favor of an all-CVT line-up. All-wheel drive does remain standard equipment across the range.
While performance was never the intention, what may be a surprise is Crosstrek’s off-road capability. The standard versions have 8.7 inches of ground clearance and feature both hill-descent control and hill-start assist. Jump up to the Wilderness and ground clearance bumps by more than a half inch to 9.3 coupled with larger more aggressive all-terrain tires.
Still don’t expect blistering acceleration. 60mph shows up eventually in 8.6 seconds. The optional 2.5-liter upgrade is a little better arriving at 60mph in 7.5 seconds. The quarter-mile shows up at just over 17 seconds. Fuel economy is impressive for an all-wheel drive vehicle. According to EPA figures, you should expect 27mpg city and up to 34 on the highway and 29 combined mpg.
Exterior Design
Whether it’s the base car or the top of the trim level, Wilderness, exterior design can be best described as rugged. Lines are rugged and aggressive with certain design cues reminiscent of legendary rally cars. Certain features included a frameless hexagonal grille, compact headlights, and a broader stance. Staying with the rally car feel, black wheel arches and rocker panels offer a sharp contrast to the body color while providing even more of an off-road feel.
Crosstrek also features several aerodynamic improvements. Air outlets have been placed across the body to include performance and stability. Designers placed outlets behind the front wheels allowing air to exit the wheel well reducing lift on the front end at speed. Other outlets were added to each side of the rear bumper to help air escape that would get trapped to help improve rear stability by reducing body sway. Impressively, this is what you would see featured in high-performance cars.

Interior Quality and Technology
A huge focus was placed on interior comfort for 2024. The previous car was touted as spacious and cargo-friendly, but the seats weren’t very comfortable. Subaru redesigned the seats to provide more support while being more comfortable and minimizing fatigue. Drivers will also notice that things are a lot quieter inside. Engineers focused on reducing certain sound frequencies inside to create a quieter cabin space for passengers by adding additional sound-deadening materials to dampen noises and cut down on vibrations, which is particularly useful doing those rush hour phone calls.
Despite those changes, the Crosstrek’s interior will never be mistaken for luxury. The interior can be described as basic but functional as Subaru continues with its functionality over the fluff model. The interior is spacious with plenty of room for five passengers. The cargo area offers 20 cubic feet of space with the rear seats up and 55 cubic feet with the seats folded.
As standard for 2024 Crosstreks is Subaru Starlink dual 7.0-inch high-resolution touchscreens.
