Summary

  • Alfa Romeo's latest supercar, the 33 Stradale, is the brand's first custom-built car since 1969 and marks a return to the 'Supercar Club.'
  • The 33 Stradale pays homage to its predecessor with a design inspired by the 1967 Unicorn and retains the V-6 engine.
  • The 33 Stradale is likely to be Alfa Romeo's last internal combustion engine (ICE) car, with an optional electric powertrain also available.

Italian manufacturer Alfa Romeo is prepped for its next supercar, a vehicle believed to be the brand's next halo car and a swan song for the internal combustion engine within the portfolio. The 6C designation carries historical significance for the manufacturer within the type of engine the car houses, as the 4C and 8C signify four-cylinder and V-8 mills, respectively.

This meant that some version of the 2.9 liter V-6 from the Quadrifoglio would power this new beast. That engine produces 505 horsepower, but a limited-run 540-horsepower variant was also made. This was all speculative as of early June.

We now know more details after the August 30, 2023 reveal, which includes the car's design, engine, drivetrain, and availability. Taking a deeper peek, we delve further into what this car is all about, starting with what it actually is called.

Meet The 2024 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale Supercar

Not called a 6C, the car still features the V-6 and is now known as the 33 Stradale. However, this name still carries historical significance for the brand and has plenty of meaning. Hailed as a "fuoriserie," while also being a limited edition, the name harkens back to the 1960s original that bears the same name.

The new 33 Stradale has been designed to enhance our identity, elevate our aspirations, and embody our DNA and values. It is the brand's first custom-built car since 1969, and I promise it will not be our last. It brings Alfa Romeo back into the 'Supercar Club,' of which we were one of the founding members. We wanted to create something that lived up to our past, to serve the brand and to make the Alfisti fandom proud.

The words of Alfa Romeo's CEO Jean-Philippe Imparato spell out the 33 Stradale's essence, letting the world know what the vehicle signifies. It's a modern creation that brings the brand back to its roots, one that elevates it to a great summit once again, and still revived enough to cause a fanatic frenzy.

A Ride Stimulated By A Storied Paradigm

Inspired by 1967's unicorn, a car with only 18 examples from inception to 1969, the name hasn't even changed from this predecessor. "Fuoriserie" actually means custom-built. One of these examples is kept today at the Museum of Arese. Sitting only 99 centimeters off of the ground, with vertically opening doors, this car is based on a racing model.

One of the differences from the track version, is a wheelbase extended by 10 centimeters, giving the passenger compartment a little more space. The car uses a steel frame rather than an aluminum one. One can clearly see how this classic design emboldened the new car, but it was also the engine that was special.

This high-revving engine was made using aluminum and magnesium alloys, with indirect mechanical injection. Combined with the car specifications, this was enough to make it a supercar for it's time, something that will now carryover into the new 2024 33 Stradale.

The new 33 Stradale appears to be the swan song for Alfa Romeo's ICE drivetrains, something that is not unlike the approaching milestone for many a manufacturer, as the push to electrify transportation increases. Given this time we live in, the 33 Stradale will actually also feature an optional electric powertrain.

Apart from knowing that these two configurations exist for the 2024 33 Stradale, the motor set up along with many of the BEV specifications are not yet known. We can infer that these figures will only increase from the rear-wheel drive ICE version, given the increased horsepower and instant available torque, along with what possibly would be an all-wheel drive variant.

There are two drive modes: "Strada" or road, and "Pista," meaning track. Strada mode keeps the active exhaust valves shut until over 5,000 rpm. This mode offers smooth power delivery, normal pedal sensitivity, and a soft suspension. Pista delivers peak power, a more aggressive pedal response, and a more rigid suspension. Speaking of the suspension, it is 100% Alfa Romeo tech, using a dual-arm scheme with active shocks. Also, the steering is semi-virtual, on both axles.

A front axle lift system enables the front of the car to rise when passing obstacles. These include speed bumps, rails, parking lots, and garages, to of course avoid damage to the body of the car. This is driver activated via the "Assetto," or setup control, located on the center console. The speed must be less than 25 mph or so. This hydraulic system raises the front end about two inches. Manually deactivating the system or exceeding the speed limit returns the car to normal height.

Performance controls are also available. For example, Pista mode enables a "Fast Start" procedure through the "Quadrifoglio" button on the center console. This maximizes acceleration by avoiding wheel slippage, through action on the gearbox, traction control, and power output. The "Suspension " selector then allows changes for both driving modes. Suspension settings are either soft to medium in Strada or hard to medium in Pista.

As far as braking, the car is equipped with the Alfa Romeo Brake-By-Wire system. This offers control of the pressure and a feeling of the pedal, not unlike what a fighter jet uses to control flight in design and principle. These are Brembo products, made specifically for Alfa Romeo, made of carbon-ceramics. They are:

  • Six-piston monobloc aluminum calipers in front
  • Four-piston in rear
  • Front and rear ventilated disc
  • Classic Rosso, Nero, Giallo colors
  • Calipers can be customized to other color solutions

A Rare Complete Package

One can see how the exterior, including the front, rear, sides, and aerodynamics, all harken back to the original design of the 33 Stradale, a car that can now be considered one of the most beautiful ever in both iterations. The interior also is not to be overlooked. Featuring a "Tributo" configuration that pays homage to the original, there is also an "Alfa Corse" option. The steering wheel lacks button controls, being the primary way to communicate with the car, and so delivering an experience devoted to the drive.

The unique door design offers an airplane cockpit feel, with the glass extending to the roof, to go along with that brake-by-wire system. The driver display is what's called a 3D "telescope" design, a first of its kind reportedly. The dashboard and central tunnel are also aviation impressions, and the cabin features touches of aluminum, carbon fiber, and Alcantara.

There's no doubt the 2024 Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale is a stunning and exceptional mid-engine supercar, one that any enthusiast would lovingly devour. Although nearly having twice as many examples as the original, for there are only 33 as the name suggests, all 33 models have already been spoken for.
