- Lucid will be launching an SUV called the Lucid Gravity to compete with vehicles like the Tesla Model X, Mercedes EQS, and BMW iX in the electric SUV market.
- The Lucid Gravity is expected to have a powertrain and performance similar to the Lucid Air, with a range surpassing other electric SUVs and driving dynamics comparable to sports cars. Pricing is expected to be at a premium over the Lucid Air, starting in the $90,000 range.
Lucid Motors has become somewhat of a household name, and despite its more recent position in the spotlight, the company is a lot older than you probably realize. Lucid Motors was officially established back in 2007, and for seven years, its primary focus was on developing battery technology. It wasn’t until 2014 that the company shifted its focus to electric vehicles, and after two years, the world was graced with the very first Lucid Air prototype. Finally, in 2020, the production version of the Lucid Air was announced. As a hard competitor for cars like the venerable Tesla Model S, a starting price of less than $80,000, and the potential for extreme all-electric range and performance, the Lucid Aid seemed like another one of those pipe dreams that never actually go anywhere. If you fall into the category of people who thought that way, you were dead wrong, and now, it’s time for the next Lucid Air to make its long-awaited debut.
So what is the next vehicle that Lucid will launch? Well, it won’t be a truck like some may have thought. Instead, Lucid is going straight to the SUV market, where it’ll compete with vehicles like the Tesla Model X, Mercedes EQS, and the BMW iX among an ever-growing list of others. Known as the Lucid Gravity, the new SUV will essentially blend everything that’s great about the Lucid Air into an overall larger and, potentially, more luxurious package. Lucid has been pretty tightlipped about specific details, but we already have a good idea of what to expect. The question is: Will it live up to your expectations, and will it be worth buying over models that are already established in the electric SUV market?
Lucid Gravity Timeline: Where It Started, How It’s Going, and When You Can Order One
With the Lucid Gravity being teased back in November 2022, you’d think that by late August 2023, we’d have heard a little something more about it. Lucid has managed to keep the most important information locked away from the general public. Now that the Lucid Gravity has been taken out on public roads in the U.S., however, the story is starting to unfold nicely. Now that people have laid eyes on the new Gravity, Lucid has spilled a few beans to keep us happy.
The most important news came from an announcement made during the company’s second-quarter financial report. We finally learned that the Lucid Gravity EV will be revealed sometime in November 2023. Following its reveal, Lucid plans to start production sometime in 2024. More than likely, we’re looking at early-to-mid 2024 vs. later in the year, which means the Gravity could initially be sold as a 2024 model or could skip straight to the 2025 model year depending on when deliveries will commence. Around the same time that Lucid reveals the production version of the Gravity, we expect the configurator and order books to open up.
So, if you’re interested, you may be able to order and place a deposit on the new Lucid Gravity EV just in time for Christmas.
Powertrain, Performance, And On-Road Expectations
Lucid has made it a point to only speak in general terms about the Gravity’s performance up to this point. However, it’s largely expected that the powertrain (and various configurations) will mirror that of the Lucid Air Sedan. This means we’re looking at the entry-level model featuring a single electric motor while all other trim levels could feature a dual-motor setup. Performance could range from 480 horsepower and 443 pound-feet of torque as seen in the Lucid Air Pure up to as much as 1,234 horsepower and 1,430 pound-feet of torque in the Air Saphire. The electric range might not be quite as good as the air, which garners 406–520 miles depending on the configuration, and it won’t likely be as fast as the air to 60 mph, but it won’t fall far from its 2.5-4.1 second sprint.
Lucid Air Performance Specs
Lucid Air Pure | Lucid Air Touring | Lucid Air Grand Touring | Lucid Air Sapphire | |
Drive Type | Single RWS / Dual AWD | Dual AWD | Dual AWD | Dual AWD |
Max Horsepower | 480 HP | 620 HP | 1,50 HP | 1,234 HP |
0-60 MPH | 3.8 Seconds | 3.4 Seconds | 3.0 Seconds | 1.89 Seconds |
EPA Range | 410 Miles | 425 Miles | 516 Miles | 427 Miles |
200-Mile Charging Time | 15 Minutes | 15 Minutes | 12 Minutes | 12 Minutes |
Price | $82,400 | $95,000 | $125,600 | $249,000 |
With that said, Lucid has promised that the Gravity Electric SUV will have more range than any other electric SUV currently on the market. That would mean that it’ll beat out the Ford Mustang Mach E with 372 miles, BMW IX with 324 miles, the Tesla Model 3 with 330 miles, the Tesla Model X with 348 miles, and even the Rivian R1S with 340 miles. If Lucid can get the Gravity to deliver more than 400 miles of range consistently, then it would mark a huge selling point as long as pricing is kept in check.
Beyond this, the Gravity is also said to offer driving dynamics that are on par with today’s sports cars, something that will likely be facilitated by its low center of gravity and sport-tuned air suspension. It will also be the most aerodynamic SUV the world has ever seen, and will be able to tow and do some light off-roading too.
Trim Levels And Pricing
While the Lucid Air was once offered in six different trims, the Dream Edition, Grand Touring Performance, and Dream Edition Performance, are no longer available while the Sapphire is a new edition. While you can expect the Gravity to be offered in some special form at launch, we expect that it will ultimately be available in the same four trims. It will likely feature all of the same technology as the Air, though it will feature a “next-generation glass cockpit,” flexible seating options to accommodate anywhere between 5 and seven adults, a rear clamshell opening with a massive cargo capacity, and a few other extras. As such, you can expect the Gravity to come at a premium over the Air. As of the time of this writing, the Air Pure starts out at $82,400, while the Touring comes in at $95,000, the Grand Touring at $125,000, and the Sapphire at $249,000 (fully equipped.) And, that’s all before any options.
We suspect the Lucid Gravity will come at a $10,000 premium, so the entry-level model could start out in the $90,000 range with the ranging-topping Sapphire commanding anywhere between $260,000 and $300,000.
