Summary

  • ScrapLife Garage takes on the daunting restoration, sourcing parts from donor Hellcats to bring the fire-damaged Demon back to life with a manual conversion
  • The Dodge Demon features a supercharged V8 Hemi with up to 840 horsepower and unique drag tires for enhanced launch capabilities.

LeeC Parts, a prominent dealer of specialty used car parts, goes viral again for his 2018 Dodge Demon project. Not only does this burned-out Demon require extensive body and mechanical repairs, but LeeC also plans to convert the standard automatic transmission-only muscle car into the first-ever manual Dodge Demon.

With the manual transmission from a Challenger SRT Hellcat, as well as some suspension parts, body, interior, exterior glass, and steering components from a handful of donor Hellcats, LeeC and the expert at ScrapLife Garage take on one of their most daunting restorations to date.

With professional help from master mechanics associated with ScrapLife Garage and LeeC Parts, the burnt Demon may once again explode with power and breathe fire... hopefully not literally.

The Challenger Demon Challenges Camaro ZL1 And Mustang Shelby GT500

The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon was first released during the 2018 model year as a street-legal drag version of the Challenger SRT Set to compete with the performance-oriented Camaro ZL1 and Mustang Shelby GT500, the Demon was subsequently packed full of race-inspired parts and options.

The 2018 Dodge Demon boasted a massive 6.2-liter supercharged V-8 Hemi that made 808 horsepower and 717 pound-feet of torque right off the showroom floor, with the V-8 Hemi able to bump up the power to a heart-pounding 840 horsepower and 770 pound-feet of torque when running on 100-plus-octane race fuel while Demon Crate package, which added a special engine controller that helps unlock the engine’s full potential, was active.

To really drive home the fact that the Demon was Dodge’s “drag” version of their popular Challenger SRT, optional interior delete was made available to buyers, which removed the passenger seating, as well as swapping the power adjusting seats and complex audio system for simpler setups to reduce weight and improve drag performance.

The standard Demon features an eight-speed automatic transmission and can sprint from 0-60 MPH in 2.1 seconds, and from 0-100 mph in 5.1 seconds. Along with its eye-watering straight-line capabilities, the Demon features standard adjustable dampers that help transfer weight rear-warding during takeoff, allowing the standard launch control to propel the Demon off the starting line with 1.8 g, hitting 30 MPH in only 1.0-second.

To add to the launch capabilities of the Demon, Dodge equipped the drag beast with special “Demon” branded 315/40R18 Nitto street-legal drag tires with a specific NTO5R compound that is exclusive to the Dodge Demon only. These special Demon tires add an extra 40 percent more grip than the SRT Hellcat, meaning whiplash is a constant risk when leaving the line.

The team at ScrapLife Garage was able to source a full set of official Dodge Demon tires for the Demon restoration, which will undoubtedly take the finished project to the next level, along with the refurbished Demon V-8 Hemi and Hellcat manual transmission.

Destroyed Dodge Demon Under $20,000

Purchased for just under $20,000, the Demon arrived presenting more hurdles than LeeC initially observed, including destroyed suspension and transmission, warped body from extreme heat, and more.

Luckily, the experts at ScrapLife Garage are up to the challenge presented by the Challenger, with the allure of creating a “world’s first” too promising to pass up. Not to mention, LeeC and his team are good friends with another popular YouTube restorer and expert mechanic shop, Street Bandito from the Industry Garage.

As the team of professionals converges on the Demon project, ScrapLife Garage tracks the progress of the restoration, with each update bringing the first-ever manual Dodge Challenger Demon closer to life.

Ironically, or unironically so, the fire-breathing 2018 Dodge Challenger Demon set to be restored by ScrapLife Garage shows obvious signs of extreme fire damage. And though LeeC and the resto team plan on giving the Demon a fresh face, they plan on keeping certain fire-damaged aspects. Proving once and for all that this project crawled straight from the depths of Hell, which it might very well have.

But before any cosmetic dreams can be brought to life, the ScrapLife Garage first needs to secure the powertrain and drivetrain. Surprisingly, the 808-horsepower supercharged V-8 Hemi survived the vicious fire that consumed over half the vehicle. This is quite strange given the fact that the surrounding components and hardware were burnt to a crisp. The 6.2-liter Hemi refused to go quietly, and for its valor, received expert restoration courtesy of High Horse Performance.

As stated before, a handful of scrap Dodge Challenger Hellcats were purchased and used as donors for the Demon project, as the two models share many parts. One donor in particular contained a decent manual transmission with enough potential to give the Demon a full manual conversion.

Also picked from the group of Hellcats were the exterior glass, hardtop roof, A-pillars, cross-support pillars, fenders, and doors. The interior of the Demon, which arrived at the shop completely reduced to ash, will receive SRT seats pulled from other Hellcats as well, with re-upholstered Demon badged.

At this point in the restoration, the Dodge is looking more like Frankenstein than a Demon, yet the ScrapLife team remains in good spirits and hopeful that their hard work will pay off.
