A few months back, we told you trusted Japanese sources suggest Suzuki is readying a GSX-8R. It’d be based on the new 776cc platform to compete in the hot middleweight sport bike segment. And now, we finally have confirmation on the matter. That too, right from the horse’s mouth, as Suzuki has certified its upcoming GSX-R.

The news comes straight from Switzerland, where Suzuki has filed certification data for a motorcycle codenamed ‘GSX800 (8R)’. Compare it to the GSX-8S filed under ‘GSX800’, and that’s enough to know what’s in the works. But there’s more here than just the name.

According to the filing, the GSX-8R boasts the same 776cc, twin-cylinder mill as the on-sale GSX-8S. And the power output - 81.8 horsepower (at 8,500 RPM) and 57.5 pound-feet (at 6,800 rpm) - remains the same. However, the company claims the R has a top speed of 134 mph (215kph), four less than the 8S’ certified 130mph. This means the R is more aerodynamic, thus confirming the presence of bodywork.

To back this up, the data lists the 8R as 30.3 inches wide. This is slightly less than the 8S, which hints at more compact clip-on handlebars. These, along with repositioned footpegs, should ensure a sportier riding posture than the naked. Similarly, the sport bike measures 44.7 inches in height–a 1.2-inch increment over you know who. We expect a slightly higher saddle because of the same. The 8S has a 31.9-inch seat height, for reference.

Last but not least, Suzuki claims the GSX-8R weighs 617 pounds, with a 165-pound rider. So the net wet weight should be around 450 pounds. Again, this is a few pounds more than the streetfighter, which should amount to the extra fairings. In case you’re curious, the heft makes the 8R considerably heavier than its Japanese rivals, the 423-pound Kawasaki Ninja 650 and the 414-pound Yamaha YZF-R7.

Differences aside, the GSX-8R will borrow plenty from its naked sibling. The trellis chassis and subframe will remain as it is, and you’ll get the same KaYaBa suspension setup. Expect the latter to be adjustable to allow fine-tuning when you attack corners. Likewise, the 17-inch wheels should be carried over, along with the Nissin brakes. Although, Brembos would be more apt for a sport bike. What about electronics? Well, the GSX-8S is quite loaded, so the 8R would be too. We’re talking traction control, quickshifter, and ride modes, all accessible via a TFT instrument cluster.

Suzuki has certified the GSX-8R as a 2024 model in Switzerland. This means the motorcycle should break cover in the next couple of months (EICMA is the most likely venue), followed by an American launch next year. The company did the same with the 8S and V-Strom 800 last year.
