There's a popular line from the iconic movie "Dark Knight" in which Harvey Dent says, “You either die a hero or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.” While this adage can be applied throughout various facets of life, we feel it especially echoes in the rapidly evolving EV industry. Superheroes, in all their glory, can eventually fade, and so can groundbreaking electric vehicles when newer challengers rise. Even the most popular electric vehicles can most likely become less desirable and trusted over time. Such is the shifting tide we now observe with the Tesla Model 3.

We can say that the Tesla Model 3 has undoubtedly played the role of a modern-day hero in the electric revolution. Since its 2017 debut, it has enjoyed monumental success and remained the world's best-selling electric car for three consecutive years (from 2018 to 2020). However, in an EV industry that's growing more competitive by the day, standing still is akin to moving backward. Case in point: the Tesla Model 3 now ranks as the third-most recalled vehicle.

Although the 2023 Model 3 Tesla confronts many of its own challenges, it's now up against an array of formidable competitors. So, rather than resting on past successes and risking villainization by critics, consumers, and competitors, Tesla has finally rejuvenated its Model 3. Aptly named "Project Highland," this ambitious initiative promises more than just Model 3's cosmetic changes; it's a comprehensive re-imagining. This next-gen Model 3 has been launched in Europe, China, and other markets, while the U.S. version is expected to debut by the end of 2023. And given the transformative updates in the Model 3 refresh, it has undoubtedly become more worthy of everyone's attention.

Thankfully, The Exterior Design Exudes A Sharper And More Aggressive Styling Now

The Tesla Model 3 exterior has largely remained consistent ever since its debut. However, the revamped 2024 Model 3 Highland comes with noticeable (but not drastic) styling updates. We are immensely impressed by how it has struck a praise-worthy balance between sporty aesthetics and superior aerodynamics. It beautifully fuses the familiar exterior design characteristics of the current Model 3 with futuristic cues to offer a more imposing road presence.

The first thing you'll spot on the Model 3 Highland is those super sleek headlights, way cooler than what we're used to seeing on the ongoing Model 3 version. The front facade has been refined, eliminating the pronounced bump and adopting a sharper nose similar to the upcoming Tesla Roadster. While the absence of fog lights might be a point of discussion for some, the edgy headlights alone on this EV sedan gives it a true head-turning appeal.

Though the side profile remains largely familiar, it boasts some subtle refinements. For instance, when you open the front or rear doors, you'll find dual-insulated windows for enhanced noise insulation — a much-needed improvement given that wind noise has been a common complaint among Model 3 owners. Moving to the back, the updated taillamps now glow with brighter LED elements, and the signature Tesla logo gives way to bold, embossed lettering. Additionally, a redesigned bumper and strategically placed light reflectors enhance the rear aesthetic.

Beyond looks, the Model 3 Highland's refined design has aerodynamics at its heart. Given that it aims to achieve a five percent improvement in the drag coefficient, numbers are expected to reduce from 0.225 to 0.219. This has prompted many to label the facelifted Model 3 Highland as the most aerodynamic Tesla ever. Amplifying this aerodynamic efficiency are the newly introduced aero-optimized wheels, available in both 18-inch Photon Aero and 19-inch Nova alloy variants, designed to reduce rolling resistance. And for those with an eye for color, Tesla introduces two tantalizing color schemes: the vibrant Ultra Red (replacing the previous red multi-coat) and the sleek-looking Stealth Gray.

The Model 3 Highland Interior Has Received A 'Stimulating' Makeover

The Tesla Model 3's minimalist approach to its interior design is polarizing — you're all in, or it's just not your cup of tea. One thing is clear, though; it hasn't quite hit that premium mark when stacked against the likes of the 2023 BMW i4 or the Hyundai Ioniq 6. But, but, but... that's about to change big time. The new 2024 Model 3 Highland has placed significant emphasis on interior enhancements to achieve that luxurious appeal and address all the criticisms that the previous models have received.

Now, the Model 3 refresh flaunts a sleeker dashboard infused with ambient lighting that casts a futuristic glow across the cabin. It's hard not to admire how the lighting flows seamlessly from the doors, caressing the entirety of the dashboard and trailing into the rear section. Pair this with the 360-acoustic glass that hushes the world outside, and you're in for a ride that's both luxurious and quiet.

The Model 3 upgrade sports a modified steering wheel, now without the transmission and blinker stalks (similar to the Tesla Model S and X). We have a feeling many would be delighted to know that Model 3 Highland doesn't feature the Yoke steering wheel (though initial reports suggested otherwise). You'll also notice the gear selector has found a new home on the touchscreen. And speaking of touchscreens, the Tesla Highland variant features a brighter and more responsive 15.4-inch screen, marginally bigger than its predecessor.

The quality of interior materials has seen a notable improvement, featuring upgraded faux-leather upholstery throughout. Heated and ventilated front seats (slightly reclined but extra comfortable) come standard and are more spacious than before. Also, the plusher rear seats are adorned with perforated leather and a heating function. And for the comfort of those seated at the back, Tesla has thrown in an 8.0-inch touchscreen for good measure, allowing control over air, entertainment, and lighting. And like the older generation, you've got the familiar 'Black' and 'Black and White' interior color schemes to choose from.

But that's not all. The Model 3 Highland interior includes other enhancements, like:

  • A robust 17-speaker surround sound system (a step up from the previous 14)
  • Enhanced connectivity, courtesy of improved Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, and microphone capabilities
  • Customizable ambient lighting to set just the right mood
  • Two revamped wireless charging pads, now with microfiber inserts
  • A middle armrest of better build quality than before with a magnetic latch

Pushing It Ahead In The EV Race Is The Range Boost

For anyone thinking the Tesla Model 3 Project Highland is mainly focused on cosmetic upgrades, the EV world's leader has left little to complain about. So much so that competitors who were outperforming the Tesla Model 3 before might now have to rethink their strategies. However, we understand that some might point out that the Model 3 Highland launch in Europe shows no changes to the performance numbers. This is true since the 0-60 mph acceleration times for both rear-wheel and Long-range all-wheel-drive models have remained unchanged.

However, a closer inspection makes it clear that Tesla has transformed one of the best-value electric cars on the market into an even better version. For instance, early test drives of the Model 3 Highland shed light on a notably stiffer body and refined suspension tuning, leading to a significantly enhanced ride quality (honestly, this one alone could potentially win back many unsatisfied consumers)

Additionally, while we've highlighted the more aerodynamic exterior of the Highland Model 3, other features make it an even more efficient electric car. Some speculation suggests that Tesla has changed half of the Model 3's parts for this new version to reduce its weight and wind resistance. Although the specifics of the battery haven't been disclosed (no surprises since it's Tesla), the range figures we're getting will definitely impress you.

According to Tesla's European site, the Highland Long Range AWD trim offers 629 kilometers (390 miles) on a full charge, while the RWD Model 3 Highland range is 513 kilometers (318 miles). Considering these numbers are based on the WLTP standard, they may vary in the US under the EPA system. Nevertheless, one can still anticipate the Model 3 Highland Long Range variant to offer around 370 miles range, solidifying its position as one of the longest range electric vehicles available.

Interestingly, the RWD model and the dual-motor AWD variant are listed on Tesla's European website, but the Performance model is conspicuously absent. But given that it's Tesla, and we all know how it likes to create the hype surrounding its vehicles, it won't be a surprise if Tesla releases the 2024 Model 3 Highland Performance trim in the next few months.

And, regarding the 2024 Tesla Model 3 Highland price, it has seen a 12-percent increase across all trims. But given the substantial upgrades, this hike seems a bit justifiable. You can expect similar pricing when the Model 3 Highland graces the U.S. market by the end of 2023. A side note for potential U.S. buyers: Tesla has rolled out discounts on existing Model 3 inventories so it might be worth a peek.
